Check printing software for Mac

Check printing software for Mac

Check Writer 123 is check printing software for Mac. It runs in Safari or Chrome on any Macintosh, MacBook, iMac or Mac mini, so there is nothing to download, and it prints through the normal Mac print dialog to the printer you already own. You type the check, see a live preview and print. Plans start at $9.99 a month, with a 14-day free trial and no card needed.

14-day free trial, no card needed. Runs in Safari or Chrome on any Mac. Nothing to install.

Why Mac owners look for check printing software

Software that simply opens on your Mac

Whether you call it a Macintosh, a Mac or a MacBook, you want to start printing checks without checking a requirements list. Because Check Writer 123 lives in the browser, an Apple chip or an Intel processor makes no difference.

No installer and nothing to keep updated

There is no download, no drag to the Applications folder and no new app to keep current. You open Safari or Chrome, sign in and your bank accounts, payees and check history are waiting.

Printing through the dialog you already know

Press Command and P, pick your printer, set the paper size and print, exactly as you would for any document. The check prints from the same dialog, so there is no separate printer setup to learn.

Checks from the same Mac you use for everything else

Rent, a contractor, a club treasurer's bills or a family account: they all print from the Mac on your desk or lap. A saved register keeps the records without a stack of stubs next to the keyboard.

How to print checks on a Mac with Check Writer 123

Setup takes about ten minutes once, and a check takes under a minute after that. For the print dialog in detail, see how to print checks on a Mac.

  1. 1

Open Check Writer 123 in Safari or Chrome

Go to the site, start your free trial and sign in. Use whichever browser you normally use on your Mac. Nothing is downloaded, so there is no installer to open and no security prompt to approve.

  2. 2

    Add your bank account

Enter the name and address as they appear on the account, the routing number and the account number. The routing number is checked as you type, and the bank name can be suggested. Add a logo and a signature, or leave the signature blank to sign by hand.

  3. 3

Write the check and read the preview

Choose a saved payee or type a new one, then enter the amount, date and memo. The amount in words is written for you and the live preview shows the finished check, so you can read it once before anything prints.

  4. 4

Run a Test Print from the Mac print dialog

Press Command and P, choose your printer, set the paper size to US Letter, set the scale to 100 percent and turn headers and footers off. Print the free Test Print on plain paper, hold it against your real stock in front of a light and use the alignment nudges if it sits off.

  5. 5

Print the real check and save the record

Load your check stock, press Print and sign if you left the signature blank. The check is saved to the register with its number. Download the register as a CSV file whenever you want to open it in Numbers or Excel.

Features Mac users like most

Runs in Safari or Chrome

The whole app is a website, so it behaves the same on a MacBook Air, a MacBook Pro, an iMac, a Mac mini or a Mac Studio, whichever version of macOS you have.

Live preview and amount in words

See the check update as you type. A $2,480.00 check reads Two thousand four hundred eighty and 00/100, written for you, so the words always match the numbers.

Free Test Print before real stock

Print a watermarked TEST PRINT on ordinary paper as often as you like. It never counts toward your monthly total, and it is the safest way to learn how your printer behaves with the Mac dialog.

Alignment nudges saved per bank account

Nudge the page left, right, up or down, adjust the MICR line separately and fix the back page on its own. Settings are saved for each bank account, so you set them once.

Saved payees, register and CSV download

Pick a payee from your saved list instead of retyping it. Search every printed check and download the register as a CSV file for Numbers, Excel or your accountant.

Batch entry and several accounts

Enter up to 25 checks at once and print up to 50 together. Each bank account keeps its own name, address, logo and signature, with 2, 4 or unlimited accounts depending on the plan.

A piano teacher with an iMac

A piano teacher runs a small studio from home and keeps an iMac and a wireless laser printer in the front room. On the first of the month she opens Safari, picks her studio account and writes three checks: $1,200.00 for the studio space, $64.50 for sheet music and $312.00 for the insurance invoice.

She presses Command and P, confirms US Letter at 100 percent, and prints a Test Print on plain paper. It sits a touch low, so she nudges the page up a fraction and prints the three real checks. The register shows all three, ready to download for her tax preparer.

Does check printing software work on a Mac?

Yes. Check Writer 123 works on every kind of Macintosh because it runs in the browser rather than as a program that has to match your system. A MacBook Air, a MacBook Pro, an iMac, a Mac mini and a Mac Studio all open it the same way in Safari or Chrome, and it does not matter whether the Mac has an Apple chip or an Intel processor.

That also takes version worries off the table. You do not need to check which macOS you are running before you sign up, and an operating system update will not leave a check program behind. The browser keeps itself current, and so does the site.

Safari and Chrome are both fine. Pick the one you already use for email and banking, and keep it updated the way you normally would.

If you are comparing options for several computers, see check printing software for the full overview, or how to print checks from your computer for the basics that apply to any machine.

How do you print a check from a Mac so it lines up?

The Mac print dialog does the work, and a few settings make the difference between a check that lines up and one that drifts. Press Command and P after you click Print in Check Writer 123, then check the following:

Once the Test Print is in your hand, put it on top of a real check or a sheet of your stock and hold both up to a window. If the text sits low, high or to one side, use the alignment nudges in Check Writer 123 and print another Test Print. Each bank account remembers its own settings, so you only tune it once. See how to fix check printing alignment if a line refuses to settle.

  • Choose the printer you will load check stock into.
  • Set the paper size to US Letter (8.5 x 11 inches).
  • Set the scale to 100 percent, never fit to page. In Chrome this is under More settings; in Safari it is in the scale field of the main dialog.
  • Turn off headers and footers. In Chrome look under More settings; in Safari choose the Safari options in the pop-up menu and clear the headers and footers box.
  • If your printer offers a paper feed or paper handling choice, pick the tray or manual slot where you load check stock.

Which printers and paper work with a Mac?

Any printer that appears in your Mac print dialog is a printer you can send checks to. That includes wireless printers that your Mac finds on the network, printers connected by USB and shared office printers. Inkjet and laser both work, and what matters most is that the printer feeds your check stock cleanly. If you are buying a printer, a model that feeds a single sheet from a rear or manual slot makes loading check stock easier. For a longer look, read what printer is best for printing checks.

Check Writer 123 prints on blank check stock, pre-printed stock or plain paper. Blank stock is the recommended choice. Plain-paper checks are best for deposits you make yourself, including mobile deposit, and whether any bank accepts a check is up to the bank. The check printing supplies checklist lists everything to have on the desk before you start, and how to align a check on blank check paper walks through the nudges.

Frequently asked questions

Does Check Writer 123 work on a Mac?

Yes. It runs in Safari or Chrome on any Mac, so you can print checks from a MacBook, iMac, Mac mini or Mac Studio. You sign in, fill in the check, press Print and send it through the normal Mac print dialog to your printer. There is a 14-day free trial with no card needed.

Do I need to download anything to print checks on my Mac?

No. Check Writer 123 is a website, so there is nothing to download, install or update. You open Safari or Chrome, sign in and your accounts, payees and printed checks are there. The only things you supply are a printer and the paper you want to print on.

Does it matter which macOS version I have?

No. The software runs in your browser rather than on macOS itself, so a recent or older macOS makes no difference as long as Safari or Chrome opens the site. You do not need to update your Mac before you start. Keep your browser current as you normally would.

Does it work on a MacBook, iMac and Mac mini?

Yes. Every Macintosh that can open Safari or Chrome can run it, including a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini and Mac Studio, with an Apple chip or an Intel processor. The steps are identical on each, because the only thing that changes between Macs is the printer you connect.

Should I use Safari or Chrome to print checks on a Mac?

Use whichever browser you already like. Both work with Check Writer 123. The print dialogs look a little different, but both let you set US Letter, a scale of 100 percent and headers and footers off. If one ever behaves oddly with your printer, try the other for a Test Print.

How do I print a check from my Mac at the right size?

Press Command and P, choose your printer, set the paper size to US Letter, set the scale to 100 percent instead of fit to page and turn headers and footers off. Then print a free Test Print on plain paper and hold it against a real check in front of a light to confirm it lines up.

What printers work with a Mac for printing checks?

Any printer that appears in your Mac print dialog, including wireless, USB and shared office printers, inkjet or laser. The printer needs to feed your check stock cleanly. Run a Test Print on plain paper first, then load your real stock. If it feeds the wrong way up, flip the stack and test again.

How much does check printing software for Mac cost?

Check Writer 123 costs $9.99 a month for 20 checks and 2 bank accounts, $13.99 for 60 checks and 4 accounts, or $29.99 for unlimited checks and accounts, with every feature on every plan. The first 14 days are free with no card, and a 30-day money-back guarantee covers the first payment.
