Personal vs. Business Checks: What's the Difference?

1 min read · By the Check Writer 123 team

Personal and business checks work the same way under the hood — both move money through the same routing number and account number system — but they differ in a few practical ways.

Size and format

Personal checks are typically a compact format, around 6 x 2.75 inches. Business checks are usually a full 8.5 x 3.5 inches — the extra width is there for a detachable stub that records what the payment was for, useful for bookkeeping.

What's printed on them

Business checks commonly include a company logo, the business's legal name and address, and sometimes multiple authorized signature lines for larger payments. Personal checks are simpler — just the account holder's name and address.

Who can sign

A personal check can only be signed by the account holder. A business account can authorize multiple signers, and some business accounts require two signatures above a certain dollar threshold as a fraud control.
