How to Write a Check to a Business

1 min read · By the Check Writer 123 team

Writing a check to a business works the same as writing one to a person, with one important difference: use the business's exact legal name, not a nickname or the name of an individual who works there.

Finding the right name

  • Check a recent invoice or receipt — the legal name is usually printed there.
  • Look for "LLC," "Inc.," or "Co." suffixes and include them if the business uses one.
  • If you're unsure, ask — most businesses will tell you exactly how they want a check made out.

A bank will generally refuse to deposit a check into a business account if the payee name doesn't reasonably match the account name, so getting this right avoids a payment bouncing back and forth.
