How to write the amount line on a check

A check has two places for the amount: the numbers in the box on the right, and the words on the long line beneath the payee. The words are the legal amount, so write them carefully. Start at the far left of the line, write the dollars in words, add "and", then the cents as a fraction over 100, and draw a line through any unused space.

  1. 1. Write the whole dollars in words: 1,250 becomes "One thousand two hundred fifty".
  2. 2. Write "and", then the cents as a fraction over 100: 75 cents becomes "75/100".
  3. 3. Optionally add "Dollars" after the dollar words.
  4. 4. Draw a line from the end of the words to the edge so nothing can be added.
  5. 5. Check that the words and the number in the box match before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write a check amount in words?

Write the dollars in words, then "and", then the cents as a fraction over 100. For $1,250.75 you write "One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100". Many people add the word "Dollars" after the dollar amount. The words and the number in the box should always agree.

How do you write cents on a check?

Write the cents as a fraction over 100 after the word "and". Seventy-five cents is 75/100. An even-dollar amount uses 00/100, as in "Five hundred and 00/100", or you can write "Five hundred and no/100".

What happens if the words and the number don't match?

Banks generally treat the written words as the controlling amount. If the two differ, the bank may pay the words, return the check, or ask you to correct it. Always check that they agree before you sign.

Should I draw a line after the words?

Yes. Drawing a line from the end of the words to the word "Dollars" or to the edge of the box helps prevent someone from adding words to change the amount.
