How to Write the Amount in Numbers on a Check

The numeric amount goes in the small box on the right side of the check, usually marked with a "$" sign. Write it as digits, for example 1,240.00 for one thousand two hundred forty dollars.

Formatting tips

  • Always include cents, even for a round amount — write "1,240.00" rather than just "1,240."
  • Write the digits close to the dollar sign and close to each other, with no gaps, so nothing can be added before or after.
  • Use a comma for thousands if your check format doesn't have pre-printed comma guides.

The written-out amount on the line below is the legally controlling figure if the two ever disagree, so double-check that both amounts match exactly before you sign.
